The New Sketchbook
Social media and Expression
Social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok have become the modern-day equivalents of traditional sketchbooks, It can be a diary, scrapbook, photo book, Journal, whatever form of recording ideas you chose. I chose to refer to it as a sketchbook. These new forms of sketchbooks though providing a space for individuals to publish their creative ideas and expressions to a global audience. This shift from physical to digital platforms has completely changed the game in how we interact with and perceive creativity in this digital age.
The accessibility and democratization of expression offered by social media are both empowering and challenging. These platforms allow anyone to showcase their work and connect with others. It also exposes creators to the pressures of comparison and the need to stand out in a vast sea of content. The darker side of this free exchange are the feelings of envy or inadequacy that can creep in when we compare ourselves to others. With the abundance of content available on these platforms, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information.
Despite these challenges, social media remains an invaluable tool for creative expression and community building. It's a space where individuals can share their unique perspectives and contribute to a diverse online community. In essence, platforms like Instagram and TikTok serve as digital extensions of our creative selves, allowing us to document, share, and engage with the world in ways that were previously unimaginable. It's a new era where our sketchbooks are no longer hidden away but are on display for the world to see.
